The liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office, is one of the most meaningful and spiritually uplifting traditions in our Catholic Church and it has been part of the Church’s liturgical prayer almost from its beginning.

Liturgy of the Hours

The Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours make up the public worship of the Church. The Liturgy of the Hours is a collection of daily psalms, prayers, and scripture reading prayed throughout the day. The major hours are Morning Prayer (Latin “Lauds”), Evening Prayer (Latin “Vespers”), and Night Prayer (Latin “Compline”).

The Psalms and reading rotate in a four week cycle throughout the year during ordinary time with some variations for Liturgical seasons and feast days. Because Clergy are required to follow the discipline of the Divine Office the perception has been that praying the Hours was only for Clergy. That is not the case. The revisions of the Liturgy of the Hours that came after the Second Vatican Council was done in part with the aim of making it more accessible to the laity.

Pray without ceasing. (1Thessalonians 5:17)
